Renegade 20 Core Manual
Version Alpha 0.30
A class is a field of training, nothing more. As your character advances in levels through experience, you can choose which field you wish to advance. Note that you do not have to only advance your class, you can instead advance your chosen race! Your class and racial levels indicate your character’s advancement and discovery, their total being your CLM. Perhaps you connect with some deep ancestral wisdom. If you are an elf you may begin to develop telepathy be building your racial levels. Perhaps you became stealthier, or more wise in the arcane arts. All these are options for you, and each choice opens up options for what choices you can make for your future Powers and Aspects.
You are studying the arcane arts. You are mastering your learning and ingenuity and advancing your knowledge of the secrets of the cosmos, summoning great magics and creating pacts with otherworldly creatures along the way.
Being an arcane class is very different from that of a divine class. You are learning to master magics on behalf of your own knowledge and power. You are not a magical vessel from your divine patrons and matrons. Instead you forge your own alliances and pacts to unlock the dark hidden secrets of the world.
Whether the power lies in your blood or because of your great talents your knowledge is from the arcane arts.
You are training in tactical combat, including the use of unarmed strikes, blades, armor, defensive stances, and many kinds of powerful strikes. Your spirit sings on the battlefield, and you find glory in defeating your enemies.
When creating a character based on the combat class, your training represents a field knowledge of arms and tactical positions. It is possible to play many different kinds of combat oriented warriors. The primary roles of a combat based character can be that of the defender.
You are developing the divinity within you and have a working relationship with the deities of the cosmos. You follow the code and portfolio of either a single deity or that of a pantheon of deities. You journey to fulfill the work of your ancestors and that of your patron or matron deities in this lifetime.
Being divine places a great burden on you as you develop in divine power. If you do not strive to abide by the laws of your deities your effective Caster Level can be dramatically reduced (halved). The benefit is that as you wax in power you can absorb some of the domains of your deity(ies) and channel unrivaled power.
When you pick your first divine class level or choose the starting package, note which kind of divine caster you are based on what is offered by your deity/pantheon: astral, harmonic, necromantic, runic, or pharonic. Your divine level also counts as a level in whatever divine caster type you chose. For instance, a Divine/Astral 5, counts as a CLM +5, but as a Divine 5 and as an Astral 5 for determining powers and aspects.
You are training in one or more of many fields, including stealth, infiltration, fast movement, trickery, lethal attacks, poison use, assassination, hiding, and more. You prefer discreet, quick ends to combat and rely on brains and trickery over brawn.
Perhaps you spent a lot of time learning infiltration, tracking, tumbling. Perhaps you grew up on the streets needing to steal for food. Infiltrator based characters primary roles are that of a striker or infiltrator.
You are developing a trade or knowledge in a field of expertise. By pursueing a craft or trade, becoming a master of what you do in hopes that your work will echo through the ages.
There are so many disciplines, crafts, and trades. Some require athletics such as blacksmithing, some require cunning such as a merchant, and others agility such as a juggler. Most people focus on trade classes in times of peace, for without them civilization would collapse.
You may wish to hesitate a minute and consider the Trade class for a short while. Advancing in a trade can help you with combat, movement, negotiations, and so much more. The aspects and powers available to people who pursue Trades may not make them the most strong or stealthy warrior, or the most powerful spellcaster, but they have a strong place along side of them in their own right!
